Gray Panthers NYC is horrified and outraged with the shooting that resulted in the loss of five people and the injuring of many others at an LGBTQ+ nightclub in Colorado Springs. On a day that is already difficult for some in the LGBTQ+ community -- Transgender Day of Remembrance -- it was made all the more so by an act of hatred by the shooter at Club Q.
Adding to the horror is that numerous people in positions of responsibility either continue to express or refuse to disavow homophobic and transphobic rhetoric and actions. It is a disgrace. And, at the same time, it is a reminder that what kills people is not same-sex marriage and gender-affirming policies, but instead homophobia and transphobia.
Gray Panthers NYC stands in unequivocal solidarity with those in the LGBTQ+ community, not just during this emotionally difficult time but at all times. Because at all times, LGBTQ+ people deserve the same rights that many others have: the right to have safe spaces where they truly feel safe, the right to marry the love of their life, the right to be called by their correct pronouns, and the right to medical procedures that improve their quality of life, to name a few.
