Representing the Gray Panthers at the 68th Session of the Commission for the Status of Women at the United Nations was a life-changing experience. I approached this incredible opportunity without specific expectations, trusting that whatever Professor Allison offered would provide insights and knowledge unattainable elsewhere. Entering this experience without expectation, I embraced all aspects of being at the UN.
One of the most striking aspects of the conference was the diversity of cultures I was surrounded by. It was incredible to connect with people from all over the world, each bringing their unique perspectives and experiences to the discussion of empowering women. Meeting and hearing from influential figures such as the Minister of Panama, the Deputy Minister of Ukraine, representatives and judges from the American Bar Association, and the World Bank on their efforts to address poverty in South Asia was eye-opening and inspiring.
The environment at the United Nations was incredible. I had never been around so many individuals passionately committed to making a difference in the world. These individuals had firsthand experiences and witnessed the injustices faced by women, dedicating their time and lives to addressing issues such as the gender pay gap and ensuring young women have access to education, healthcare, safe transportation, and positions of power where decisions are made. Essentially, they are rewriting the narratives placed on women through systems of injustice, discrimination, and stereotypes. Spending five days at the UN and hearing the stories of women from all ages and backgrounds made me and the other students incredibly proud and grateful to be a part of this movement. Every time we sat in one of the side events, I thought to myself, “More people need to experience this, more people need to hear what I am hearing.”
I am forever grateful to the Gray Panthers and Professor Tim Allison for providing the other students and me with the opportunity to represent them at the United Nations. Sharing the Gray Panthers' mission and values at the conference was an honor. The Gray Panthers' dedication to unity and dismantling injustices and discrimination to create a more humane society resonated deeply with those I spoke to. When asked who I was there with, I proudly stated the Gray Panthers and shared their commitment to bringing together young and old, women and men, to promote unity across all ages and backgrounds.
New York City itself was life-changing. It was so vibrant, and every moment was filled with new experiences and learning opportunities. I left NYC feeling incredibly empowered and inspired to continue advocating for change. So much so, even months later, I am still in disbelief over the entire experience—the meetings I attended, the people I met—that I find a way to intertwine it into almost every conversation.
My time at the UN and in NYC reinforced my belief that people are dedicating their lives to making a difference for future generations. All of the stories and efforts that were discussed emphasized how far we have come in making the world a better place for women. However, it also highlighted the ongoing struggles and triumphs of women worldwide—struggles we are often blind to but that the UN placed under a spotlight, further emphasizing the need for continued efforts to achieve gender equality.
I am incredibly thankful to Professor Tim Allison and the Gray Panthers for allowing us to serve as representatives at the Commission on the Status of Women at the UN. I hope more students have the opportunity to witness the greatness I experienced, as it is truly life-changing. Representing the Gray Panthers was an honor, and I am committed to carrying forward their mission of social justice and unity. This experience has left me with a renewed sense of purpose and a deep appreciation for the work done to uplift and empower women globally.
